VK 16.02 Leopard - German Light Tank, 1942
By the time development for what would become the Panzer V Panther by MAN, a light tank was also being developed in parallel that would take heavy inspiration from this upcoming design. This was to fill the role of a well-rounded light reconnaissance vehicle that Germany never really had in WW2, as well as having the ability to deal with tanks like the T-34 or KV-1. To solve this quandary, MAN's VK16.02 design was fast, relatively well armored for a light tank, and equipped with a 5cm KwK 39 L/60 in a truncated and shortened hull reminiscent of the panther. Later, the work on the VK 16.02 was handed off to Daimler Benz and MIAG to allow MAN to focus on the Panther, and by the time the design was ready in mid-1943 and presented to Hitler, it was deemed obsolete for the time and the project was cancelled. No prototypes were built, however the turret for the leopard was later used on the Sd.kfz.234/2 Puma.
Whether you played this tank in a video game or like the idea of having a mini-panther, this kit makes a great addition to your Lego tank collection. This model features great detailing, interleaving road wheels with articulating tracks, and a fully rotating turret with elevating and depressing main gun. |
